![]() ![]() I'm somewhat surprised that everyone is expecting Villante to get back on track. ![]() He'll use his wrestling to add another line item to his resume. Villante just hangs around, both in fights and generally in the UFC. Durability wins the day as Villante puts Barroso away in the third. Villante probably has enough in the tank to outlast Barroso. This is not a great fight, nor is it a fight of great significance. I'll go with Villante, because he's at least shown a higher ceiling. Francimar Barroso meanwhile, has posted average results against middling competition at light heavyweight. Gian Villante once looked promising, but he simply can't generate good results. Pay-per-view main cards don't usually house loser-leaves-town matchups, but this pairing could well be one. Gian Villante enters UFC 220 on a two-fight skid. He's certainly capable of winning this fight.but I don't feel bad enough to change my pick. I feel bad having Font not get picked here because this isn't a squash. Font will exchange but ultimately go down. This is the fight where Almeida finally gets back on track. UFC 220's main card will start with a bang. Almeida is going to win a quick, but violent, fight. I'm still a believer in Almeida, and Font is someone who will oblige him in the center of the Octagon. My guess is the Brazilian is the last man standing. But he's still an excellent fighter, making his tussle with Rob Font, an unheralded but talented scrapper, an interesting clash.īoth men harbour knockout power and are willing to let their hands go, so there is a high probability of a knockout here. OK, so Thomas Almeida isn't the heir apparent at bantamweight. Either way its a must-watch kind of event.Thomas Almeida is looking to get back on track after having his hype train derailed. Or we see the dominance of two champions fend of the rising tide of challengers to their crown. We could see two big knockouts in both of our title bouts at UFC 220. At some point in the fight, if Cormier wants to win, he will have to traverse the striking ranges of Oezdemir, and that is risky. It’s an interesting dilemma for the champion to work around, and in spite of his nickname, Volkan Oezdemir has all the time in the world for Cormier to walk onto one of his punches. Oezdemir only seems to need a small amount of space to lay his opponent out cold though, and the regular gameplan of Cormier may leave him vulnerable to that power. Much like he did to the tall Swedish striker, Alexander Gustafsson. Using a single neck tie, Cormier uses hooks and uppercuts to beat up his challenger. In his last two fights he’s been a few inches from the target, and Cormier loves a close range battle. The intangible here is the short range power of Volkan. Perhaps a slightly longer fight, maybe a decision even, but a smothering beatdown none-the-less. In his bouts with Anthony Johnson, another terrifying power-puncher, Cormier stuck to him like glue, dragged him to the mat and choked him out. His conditioning and tenacity, when brought together, are a suffocating force inside the Octagon. If he can convince Stipe that moving towards him would be unwise, then he can dictate the pace and pick his shots.ĭaniel Cormier is an excellent wrestler. He has to fight conservatively in the early going and use that potential use of power as a deterrent to buy him space and time. Especially in such a high-paced and dynamic sport. I’m sure a big part of Ngannou's focus would be pushing his conditioning to a new level, but that strength and muscle mass comes at a cardiovascular cost. Once fatigue sets in a minute rest between rounds isn’t enough for Ngannou to recover. ![]() This could be a rapid spiral downwards for the challenger. Then he can get to work breaking his man down, working takedowns, leaning on him, punching him at short range. A close, clinch battle against the fence will fatigue the challenger and fill his power-punching arms with lactic acid, making the muscles burn. Those first two rounds are critical though, and contrary to what instinct would tell you to do, the smartest approach is to get as close to Ngannou as possible. Should this fight make it into the third round, I would expect Micoic to run away with a decision or get a late stoppage. Oezdemir laughs off Cormier’s jibes ahead of his UFC 220 title shot. ![]()
